got math?
Although the people assigned to work with individuals in Notable
Software's got math? program may be thought of as "tutors" we prefer
to use the word "facilitators" to describe their position.
Facilitators
differ from tutors in that they tend to:
- practice active listening
- guide through the use of questions
- seem more like a coach than an instructor
- use persuasion instead of lecturing
- keep the big picture in mind while working on details
- consider the needs and differences of the individual
- express intellectual curiosity and enthusiasm
- distinguish process from content
- share responsibility for the journey
- ask for opinions and suggestions
Although the goals of tutoring and facilitating math-related subjects
may seem similar, the facilitator employs techniques that are intended to also help
the individual better understand the way they think about the subject
materials in an effort to encourage the development of broader
problem-solving methods that can be applied to new topics within and across
disciplines.
